Paris, Part II: Aquarium de Paris

[Read Part I]

Visiting the Aquarium was a stroke of genius. Emily could finally get out of her buggy and crawl around. She has recently become very interested in animals so this was a good opportunity to show her something different. She loved the movement and the colours of the fish, although not so much the larger fish.

She spent most of her time at the Aquarium shouting at the fish, or trying to catch and lick them.

And then we found the petting pool. She stood by the side for a while, just watching. Then tentatively, she touched the water. Then a bit more and a bit more, until five minutes in, her top and cardigan were soaked right through (she kept turning around to try and dry her hands on David's arm!) and she was even trying to catch the poor, terrorized fish.

We stopped to have lunch shortly after that (sushi - a bit ironic to be serving sushi at an Aquarium, we thought!) and we stripped Emily down to her vest and dried her clothes under the hand drier in the toilets which did the job and she was fast asleep, fully content, soon after that. Suddenly we didn't feel like such bad parents any longer: we had found something for Emily to enjoy in what seemed to be the land that forgot the toddler!

More Paris adventures to follow...

  4. :-D that aquarium holds some not so fond memories for me...last time we went, maia and g were roaming inside for over an hour while I sat outside waiting for them, trying not to throw up on anyone (3 mths pregnant with Robin at the time). We've never had problems there...but then again we never went with a toddler. We plan to go next autumn, when Robin will be just a bit older than Emily is now so these posts made me think. I hope you have more positive posts coming up! x

    1. Meh can't quite say I do. At least not about Paris itself! Next and last Paris update coming up on Monday... I think if I have any advice, it would be not to take your visit for granted because you know the place so well. That's the mistake we made. Research things for toddlers to do before you go. I can't guarantee you'll find much (at least it will depend largely on the weather) but maybe you'll get there a bit more prepared than we were! x

  6. How strange Clare, I read your posts re. kid-unfriendly Paris and notice we had a totally different experience! I admit Niclolo' is smaller and confined to the pram but during our weekend in Paris everyone was really ok with us being 2 + 1. We always asked whether it was ok to have the pram inside the restaurant (otherwise we'd have searched elsewhere) and all places were very nice and friendly. We were also offered a highchair and look at strangely when we refused, saying that we didn't need one .. I suspect their experience with kids isn't that vast hence the lack of understanding that a kid could be too young!

    1. I'm not surprised that you say this. Our research for things to do in Paris with toddlers brought up "things to do with baby" and "things to do with children" - it simply entirely skipped the toddler stage. It would have been a completely different story had we gone when Emily was 5 or 6 months old, but now that she wants to move around and be part of everything, it's a whole new ball game!
